—Demo Review— NieR: Automata DEMO 120161128

I have NIER for 360 but I've barely played it. Honestly, it lost me somewhere early on. Regardless, the clips and trailers for NieR: Automata were just too intriguing for me to ignore. When I saw there was a demo, I grabbed it.

HGG Score: ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ 8/10

In a world taken over by machines, it's your job to destroy them. Your name is 2B. And you're an android.

First impressions?
Just the opening brought a few other games to mind: Enslaved, Mass Effect, Portal...and one other one that now slips my mind. Anyway, this isn't a bad thing, just an observation based on the overall ambiance of the first few minutes of the game.

Mostly, Enslaved popped into my head: the music; the almost glitchy computer-like loading screens; the overgrown, dystopian future filled with machines trying to kill you...yeah, there are a few similarities. Again, not a bad thing. I freakin' LOVE Enslaved.

Graphics and voices?
Rather beautiful graphics, smooth and barely glitchy (you know, hands disappearing through bodies sort of glitches), at least as far as I could tell. I thought the voice work was rather well done too, actually. The voices seem to fit the three—no, wait, FOUR characters who actually talk. No complaints there.

I found the controls a bit awkward, but I tend to have a bit of trouble adapting to a new game, so it might just be me.

It's an action game, so basically just run in and start swinging. 2B has some rather lovely moves, though, almost like a ballet dancer when she fights. You can see a bit of it in the really long clip I've embedded below. ▼ (There is a second video, the second part of my playthrough. It's twice the length. If you're interested in seeing the demo played in its entirety, you can find the second video HERE.)

There are things to collect, but they don't seem to do anything in the demo. Probably just something to illustrate that this game does have exploring and collecting involved. Bit of platforming too, but nothing difficult.

You are 2B, an android soldier ordered to destroy a goliath of a machine. That's it. It's just a demo. Oddly...well, emotional for how short it is, but still, just a demo.

There are a few touching moments in this. These are androids, who aren't supposed to feel, yet it's clear they do. And the end of the demo is rather surprising, or at least it was to me.

Awkward controls. That's about it, really. I guess. And it's really, really short. Reminds me of how short the FFXV Platinum Demo is that Squeenix put out. Only 30-45 minutes and you're done. Even less if you blitz it. It's basically just long enough to get you used to the exploratory nature and battle system of the game.

Definitely worth trying out to see if you like the gameplay. And I do.

But the big question when reviewing a demo is this: Does it make me want to buy the full game? Why yes, yes it does.

HGG score?
♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ 8/10 life hearts.

Where to buy?
You can grab the demo in the PlayStation Store. Far as I know, there isn't a demo for PC. This game is currently set for release March 7, 2017. It can be preordered almost everywhere.

Until next time...

  1. If you dont like the controls you actually can remap everything to fit your style.

    1. That's good to know. I'll have to play it again and see if I can figure out what would be most comfortable for me. Or I could just wait until I get the full game and do it then. Either way. :D
